My contribution to Doodled

  • Worked with programmers and artists to frame the right style of the game

  • Designed the main enemies and their attacks

  • Designed the movement and the combat system framework

CONCEPT

The theme of this jam was ROOTS, since the beginning, we knew that to win we needed to have an original idea since most would go for roots as family roots or tree roots. After a while, we came to use the roots of the words as a combat system like the darkest dungeon. We decided then to use a pen as a protagonist that needed to fight enemies created in a notebook and arrive at the end to fight the main bosses. The main style of a sketch notebook allowed us to be creative with the use of different artistic styles for the enemy and the world.

 

GAMEPLAY

For the gameplay, we wanted something like the darkest dungeon where the player needs to fight different parties of enemies using their abilities, with the unique difference that the player will use the roots of words as his abilities. After we completed the combat system we needed a world to put the player inside so we created one, With the different artistic styles we created a diversified world full of sketches where the player will move inside. The objective of the player is to arrive at the end of the level collecting roots to use in combat with each one having different abilities and roots to unlock gates to arrive at the end of the level.

 

POST MORTEM

I'm very proud of this game, not only because I was the only designer and a lot of pressure was put on me, but also for what we accomplished with the team. Winning 2nd place and the craziest idea was the best thing about this game cause confirmed my ability in design and the ability of the team of creating wonderful games
"I had doubt during the creation but the result wash away the fear"


 

 

IN THE END

This Jam was the most intense of all the ones that I made, the experience that I accumulated its been precious to guiding me and the team to the final release of the game. After this jam, I can affirm that I'm ready to be the best designer I can be.
